Our French Intent
At our school we will provide pupils with a solid foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills, facilitating future study and opening opportunities to study or work abroad in the future. Our curriculum aims to instil a love of language learning and awareness of other cultures. We want our children to develop the confidence to communicate in both written and spoken French for practical purposes. Our teaching of French ensures progression of skills and key vocabulary, and follows a sequence which builds on previous learning, providing both support and challenge. We have matched units of work to whole school topic themes to exploit links to the wider curriculum, making French relevant and purposeful.

Our Curriculum implementation
Our curriculum gives opportunities to communicate for practical purposes around familiar subjects and routines. It provides balanced opportunities for communication in both written and spoken French, with the initial focus is on developing oral skills before progressing to written work.
The key skills and vocabulary are revisited with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to build on previous learning. Cross-curricular links are explicit throughout, allowing children to make connections and apply their language skills to other areas of learning.
Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired and group work including role-play, language games and language detective work.
Our curriculum contains sound files to provide exposure to “native speakers” and film clips showing French being used in familiar situations. This also provides discussion points for similarities and differences for intercultural understanding.
The impact of the scheme is that the children will, by the end of KS2
Be able to engage in purposeful dialogue in practical situations and express opinions.Make increasingly accurate attempts to read unfamiliar words, phrases and short texts.
Speak and read aloud with increasing confidence and accuracy.
