Our Art Intent
At Kippax Greenfield, we aim to provide our children with opportunities that enable them to express themselves imaginatively and creatively. In line with our vision of Growing Greatness at Greenfield, we want to foster a love of art and design and inspire and nurture their talents and interests.
Art units take children on a journey that aims to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they require to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Art is taught in a sequence of lessons and where possible it is used to enhance the learning of our wider curriculum topics so that our children are able to make purposeful links and see how art often reflects or comments on what is happening in the world.
Our Great Greenfield Five values underpin the art curriculum
Respect – this is essential for a productive and vibrant learning environment and when engaging with art from diverse cultures and communities.
Resilience – we build on previous skills and knowledge and provide low stakes opportunities to experiment and be creative. We also take the time to evaluate our own work and think about how we can develop our art.
Responsibility – children take ownership for their sketchbooks and look for interesting and creative ways to present their work. Sketchbooks show our journey through a unit and reflect how we have developed and honed our skills.
Collaboration – we make use of ambitious vocabulary, modelling using this during discussions to evaluate and express our opinions about works of art. We use an “I do, we do, you do,” approach to support the learning of new skills.
Aspiration – we understand how art is relevant to us and can help us to express ourselves creatively and engage in a discussion about the world around us.
Our art curriculum provides a clear and comprehensive scheme of work that will show progression of skills across all key stages within the strands of Art. All units of work begin with studies of artists or cultural and historical contexts, and the skills and media taught within the unit are then inspired by this. Through their time at Kippax Greenfield, children will study a diverse range of artists and cultures as well as the work of local artists. We want our children to see themselves as artists and to encourage their creative aspirations.
Working in sketchbooks, children are given an opportunity to show their own perspective through observation, experimentation and illustration. A wide variety of media are used to encourage creativity and imagination and nurture interests. Manipulative skills are developed as well as an awareness of colour, texture, design and dimension. We encourage pupils to use the correct vocabulary when evaluating and describing the key elements of art so that they are able to think critically and develop their skills. This also encourages a more rigorous understanding of how art reflects and shapes the history, culture and wealth of the world around us. Where possible, we link to learning in the wider curriculum to further this understanding.
