Keir Mather, MP for Selby & Kippax, visited Kippax Greenfield to engage with students from the York and Sheffield classes. The visit came after Year 3, 4, and 5 pupils completed a fieldwork study in Geography, during which they explored the strengths and areas for improvement in their local area.
The children confidently presented their findings to Mr Mather, sharing concerns about issues such as graffiti, roadworks, and vacant shops. In response, the MP promised to take their feedback to the Houses of Parliament. Following the presentations, students participated in a lively Q&A session, learning about Mr Mather’s preferred mode of transport, his thoughts on football, and how he became an MP.
During his visit, Mr Mather received a Greenfield Value Ticket for demonstrating the school value of responsibility, in recognition of his reasons for entering public service. He also met the Kippax Greenfield Values Ambassadors at their first full meeting.
Mrs Ball, Year 3-4 class teacher, commented on the significance of the visit: “It was a fantastic enrichment opportunity that truly made our children feel heard. It gave real purpose and aspiration to our learning. We now have a number of budding MPs!”
Miss Huggan, Year 4-5 class teacher, added, “It was a great learning experience that brought our geography work to life. The children loved the opportunity to meet and share their findings with our local MP.”
Mr Ball, Geography subject leader, said, “Combining our hands-on fieldwork with the chance to share our observations with Mr Mather has been a fantastic start to our Geography learning this year. Well done to our students for representing our school so maturely, and thank you to Mr Mather for visiting.”
Reflecting on the visit, Year 4 student Darren expressed his ambition, stating, “I want to be like him. I’m going to be an MP when I grow up!”
Kippax Greenfield was thrilled to be the first school Mr Mather has visited since his election in July and looks forward to welcoming him back in the future.
Thank you for the visit @keirmathermp
